Those watching the news have no doubt seen many images from the referendum organized by the Catalan government and suppressed by the Spanish government. Startup Grind Barcelona acknowledges and would like to share information regarding the political situation in Catalonia.
These events should not affect your safety or the Startup Grind Barcelona Conference, still planned for October 9-10th. The more intense images you might have seen via the news or social media occurred on Sunday due to blocked voting polls and the Spanish national police presence. Since Sunday, no violent incidents have gone through, only peaceful demonstrations and a general stoppage last Tuesday.
Catalan people have been holding peaceful demonstrations throughout the years and are a good example of that. Politico wrote about it.
Fortunately, the opening venue, the AC Hotel Barcelona Forum, and the UPC Auditori Vertex are both NOT within the Centre, and thus will not be affected in case of demonstrations. All conference locations are positioned in residential areas, which have remained peaceful.
Some might have heard about the general strike on Tuesday, causing disruptions to public transportation and other services. As an alternative to public transportation, we suggest the use of Cabify or myTaxi. If you choose to download Cabify, first time users can click or use the code CARLOSC13265 to receive a complimentary discount on your ride & make our chapter co-director Carlos happy!
Despite these unexpected events, we are still fully prepared and looking forward to the conference in just a few short days! You can find the finalized & full agenda at https://www.startupgrind.cat/docs/agenda.pdf.
